The Center for Family Development (TCFD), a nonprofit headquartered in Shelbyville, Tennessee, was founded to support children and families by preventing child abuse and neglect while equipping parents with the tools to build healthy, stable homes. Established in 1995 as Healthy Families at Bedford County Medical Center, we expanded our services across multiple counties. Our organization became an independent 501(c)(3) in 1999 and, renamed The Center for Family Development, we broadened our scope through grants, partnerships and community-based programs.
Over the years, TCFD has evolved with the community’s needs. While some programs were phased out due to funding shifts or changing state priorities, others— such as Healthy Families and the Relative Caregiver Program— have remained central to our mission. Today, The Center for Family Development operates multiple offices across Middle Tennessee, serving over twenty counties, and we remain committed to empowering families, strengthening communities and ensuring children have the opportunity to thrive.
